The developer of iCab Mobile, a feature-rich alternative to the Safari Web browser on iPad and iPhone, has been ordered by Apple to remove its ability to download and install JavaScript modules.

Presumably it’s not the fact that iCab can execute JavaScript that’s causing Apple to apoplectically puff and splutter, but rather its ability to download modules. Both Apple and Google frown upon apps that contain market-like functionality, and someone at Apple probably thought that iCab’s JavaScript modules looked like a bit too much like discrete apps.

Alexander Clauss, iCab’s developer, has rather a lot to say on the matter. “Maybe if I would have called the modules ‘smart bookmarks’ and would have made installing them much more complicated, Apple would have never asked to remove the ability to download them from the internet. The great user experience of installing modules has probably created a suspicion that these modules are more than just a piece of JavaScript code. From a pure technical point of view, if Apple does not allow to download modules (JavaScript code), Apple would also have to disallow to load web pages in general, because these do also contain JavaScript code.”

In conclusion, to circumvent Apple’s draconian decree, iCab Mobile now simply comes bundled with some 20 JavaScript modules. The ability to download modules made by third-party developers has been disabled, however — but even then, Clauss says that you can simply contact him and ask for your module to be bundled with the next version of iCab.

Looking through Engadget’s annals of robotic achievements, we see droids juggling, dabbling in competitive sailing and even manning prisons. Cool as they are, those functions aren’t going to mean a thing when Mr. Automaton is lost in the wilderness, damaged and without a helping human hand in sight. Researchers at ETH Zurich are working to change that scenario, as they’re currently developing a “self-reconfigurable” device that packs a glue gun for creating the tools it needs on the fly. It might not be the quickest method — as you’ll see in the video below, making a glue cup takes a good hour — but it’s effective enough for transporting and pouring water. That’s not to say that the prototype is ready to fend for itself; it built the cup, but only under human direction. The researchers’ next step is adding in autonomous capabilities so the bots can repair things — and even build other robots — without being told to do so. A sea of self-regenerating droids? Sounds harmless to us.

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

Although we are disappointed by the Commission’s ruling that certain Motorola Mobility products violated one patent, we look forward to reading the full opinion to understand its reasoning. Motorola Mobility will not experience any impact in the near term, as the Commission's ruling is subject to a $0.33/per unit bond during the 60 day Presidential review period. We will explore all options including appeal.

HTC's One X and EVO 4G LTE may soon have a few friends to keep them company while they wait for customs to allow them into the US, as the ITC has decided to ban the import of Motorola Android phones for infringing on a Microsoft patent for "generating meeting requests and group scheduling from a mobile device". According to FOSS Patents, this order will likely go into effect in 60 days, as the ITC has rejected Google's claims that an exclusion order was not in the public's best interests. Because of FOSS Patents owner Florian Mueller's close ties to Microsoft and his track record on proceedings of this type, we're awaiting on an official word from both sides to see just how damaging this decision may be before we make any predictions. It's very likely that Motorola can just tweak a setting and comply with the ITC's rulings while they await a full judgment.

If you recall, Motorola has been embroiled in legal disputes with Microsoft while other big players have decided to pay licensing fees to stay out of court. Sometimes this strategy will work, sometimes it backfires. In the end innovation gets stifled by patents on ideas instead of methods, and consumers always lose. More on this as it comes forth.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the ‘final’ code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That’s all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign ‘non-fragmentation clauses.’ This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they’re unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android — which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors — and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google search.

Heavy users will want to check out Tmo's 24-month "Full Monty" plan, which includes unlimited texts, data, Tmo-to-Tmo calls and 2000 minutes of calls to other networks. That'll set you back £49.99 up-front, then £36 per month thereafter.

If you're after a smaller monthly bill, plans starting as low as £10.50 per month are also offered, albeit with a much heftier up-front fee of £300. And if you really want a free Galaxy S III, then the network offers the phone without any up-front fee on a £41 per month plan which includes completely unlimited calls, data and texts.

T-Mobile's site indicates that orders placed today will arrive "after May 30," so even if you're pre-ordering, you might have to wait until after launch day to receive your phone. As we reported a couple of weeks back, the Galaxy S III will launch on every major UK network, so if Tmo's plans aren't doing anything for you, you'll have plenty of other options.

Last February, Apple came clean about its efforts to clean up the environment, detailing intentions to make its Maiden, NC data facility a greener place. That site, already home to one solar farm, is now set to host a second 20 megawatt photovoltaic array spanning 100 acres, a one-two power punch that’ll jointly generate 84 million kWh annually. Combined with the company’s in-development biofuel cell plant, scheduled for opening later this year, that theoretic yield should hit the 124 million kWh mark — an amount sufficient to power nearly 11,000 households — providing 60 percent of the center’s electric demands. Still, that’s not enough to adequately keep operations afloat, so for that very necessary, leftover 40 percent, the house that Jobs built plans to purchase similar clean energy from outside local sources. When all is finally up and running smoothly, the southern facility will earn the distinction of “most environmentally sound data center ever built.” Or, at least until another well-heeled competitor comes along to contest that title. Now that’s a friendly competition we can get behind.

Sony’s also rolling out fresh glass for each this July, in the form of an E-mount 18-200mm, F3.5-6.3 zoom lens for $850, and an 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 A-mount telephoto unit that’ll set you back $500. Both the NEX-F3 and A37 will come with kit 18-55mm lenses and cost $600 when they go on sale in June, which makes them quite competitively priced as compared to their competition. An enviable pricing position, to be sure, but can they deliver the imaging goods? Many of you are already familiar with the Xiaomi Phone and its reverence in the MIUI community, but now the Chinese manufacturer has introduced a less expensive counterpart to the original, which is aptly known as the Youth Edition. Priced at 1,499 yuan ($237), this smartphone will sell for a full 500 yuan less than its elder and will retain many of its components, which include a 4-inch, 854 x 480 display, an 8-megapixel camera, 4GB of ROM and a 1,930mAh battery. In fact, the only significant changes are the dual-core 1.2GHz CPU (which is down from 1.5GHz), and 768MB of RAM instead of the original 1GB. Xiaomi will produce 150,000 Youth Edition handsets, which seems like a healthy number, but if you want to stake your claim to one, you’d best join in the pre-registration process, which runs now through May 18th.

Nortel, once one of the biggest telecoms company in the world but now in the death throes of bankruptcy, has selected Google’s $900 million bid for its patent portfolio as the stalking horse bid. This doesn’t mean that Google will automatically win Nortel’s massive array of telecoms patents, but it does mean that Google is the preferred buyer.

Google, which has a history of lobbying for patent law reform, has been the target of many patent litigation suits. Google’s relative infancy means that it has a lot less patents in the vault than big-hitters like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM, and buying Nortel’s portfolio of 6,000 patents could provide better protection against patent litigation in the future. It’s worth noting that both Apple and RIM have showed interested in the portfolio, too.

Mashable speculates that the patents — which are nearly all telecoms-related — will be used to defend against Oracle’s attacks on Android’s use of Java. We reckon that Google is simply looking to cover its future endeavors in the world of networking. In the absence of patent law reform, and continued threats to net neutrality, owning a bunch of telecoms patents sounds like a very sensible move.

As much as we’re familiar with wireless power, we know developing a truly contact-free form of charging has a whole raft of extra challenges, such as getting into the sweet spot for power delivery and the potential traffic jam caused by throwing another device into the mix. Sony thinks it has these problems licked through a newly-published patent application. Its method uses location-finding to steer users until they’re close enough for the wireless power source to reliably do its job. In some cases, it can use one mobile device to relay power to another, keeping everything fed even if the main power hub is tied up. Multiple power sources next to each other can go so far as to decide which of them should be the one to send power. The patent isn’t a certain sign that your VAIO or Xperia is about to cut the cord altogether — Sony first submitted this vision of the future in 2009. Even so, it gives us hope that our gadgets will one day start charging themselves instead of making us hunt down a wire or charging plate.
